Diary study

Qualitative research method that asks participants to report themselves on a set of open-ended activities and to detail their attitudes and expectations over a period of time and in the context of the study.

Steps

  1. Define the context of the study and what you want to investigate. Recruit participants (3-4 people per user segment) and ensure they can invest the time for this study

  2. Prepare a “probe kit” for your participants that includes instructions for how they can report on a set of activities you want to investigate and recording tools (notebooks, cameras, diaries, tables…)

  3. Let the participants go about their daily lives for a set period of time allowing them to report independently with the tools they’ve been given. Follow up with them on occasion to monitor their progress, answer questions and keep them focussed.

  4. Collect the results at the end of the study and outline patterns or emotional insights from your participants (with an affinity diagram)
